About / Brian Liu Xu

Systems thinker.
People person.

Software engineering is my trade. Human-centered design and organization development are how I make sense of the work around it.

Portrait of Brian Liu Xu

Nice to meet you.

I studied Computer Science and Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science. I spent 10 years at Microsoft, first working on Microsoft Edge's UX Look & Feel and later with M365 Substrate on Special Projects & Resources.

I'm no longer a Software Engineer at Microsoft, and I'm making time now to explore my passion: the work that happens where technology, design, and people meet.

My work moves between code and context. I care about architecture, evidence, and the mechanics of a system. I also care about the quiet signals that tell us whether a system is helping: whether a person knows what to do next, whether a team can disagree productively, whether a tool gives people more agency than it takes away.

Humanism is a technical practice.

Empathy is not a soft alternative to rigor. It is how rigor gets pointed at the right problem. I use research, metrics, and systems thinking to understand what is happening, then return to the people affected by the decision. The goal is not to remove complexity from the world; it is to make complexity navigable and shared.

That perspective is what connects my engineering, design, and organization development work. The artifacts change. The responsibility does not.
